Electric Heat vs. BioHeat

Date Posted:

April 2023

Did you know that electric heating is not as environmentally friendly as initially perceived?

You might have heard a lot about heat pumps in the news or through advertisements recently, positioned as a clean and efficient alternative to oil, propane, or natural gas. These fossil fuels are positioned as dirty fuels and electric heat pumps remove these and is a clean alternative. However, this isn't the complete picture because electricity is generated at power plant, that still use fossil fuels as a power source. Although electricity doesn't produce any harmful emissions upon consumption, the generation and transportation of electricity throughout the U.S. power grid have negative impacts on the environment, such as:

  • Contributing to global warming,
  • Extracting heavy metals from the environment,
  • Constructing physical grids across the landscape,
  • Increased consumption of fossil fuels,
  • And creating visual pollution.

So why do we mention this? Well, as electricity becomes an increasingly popular source of home heating, the U.S. will need to produce more electricity to meet the rising needs of consumers. And as electricity is generated/transported, harmful gasses and emissions are released into the atmosphere.

Although electricity is a convenient source of energy for your home, it is not the end-all-be-all of home heating! Instead of using electricity for every application in your home, we recommend using BioHeat for your home's heat.

BioHeat is a blend of ultra-low sulfur heating oil with renewable biodiesel, working as a direct replacement for standard home heating oil! BioHeat is a clean, energy-efficient fuel, allowing your equipment to greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional heating oil. Additionally, BioHeat is classified as a renewable energy source, due to the fact that it is made out of recycled materials like cooking oils, fats, algae, and other plant oils, making it a sustainable source of fuel.

Want to know the best part? BioHeat is 100% compatible with standard heating oil equipment! Right now, we are using a blend of B40 for our BioHeat, meaning that 40% is renewable biodiesel while the remaining 60% is standard number 2 heating oil. In years to come, our mixture ratio will continue to rise until eventually reaching a rating of B100, where 100% of the fuel is renewable biodiesel. Santoro Oil is always looking for ways to create a more sustainable future, and we believe that BioHeat is the next step in achieving that goal.
