Warren was the original location of the Indian village of Sowams, located on the peninsula of Pokanoket which is modern-day Mount Hope Neck. Edward Winslow and Stephen Hopkins set up a trading post in Sowams in 1621, in 1623 Winslow saved the life of a Wampanoag gaining them an important ally. Sowams was ceded to Rhode Island from Massachusetts in 1747 along with several other surrounding towns. It was renamed Warren in honor of Sir Peter Warren.
Brown University was founded in Warren in 1764 and accepted its first students in 1765. It was the Baptist answer to the other religiously aligned Ivy League Schools, however, it differed by allowing students of any religion to attended. This ideal was in line with Roger Williams when he founded Rhode Island under the same principles.
